Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have a gas furnace paired with a heat pump

No, in the GTA you do not need a gas furnace. Many of us with heat pumps are happy we removed the gas furnace. It costs less to operate and neither a gas furnace or a heat pump will work in a power outage.

How much does a heat pump cost?

Centrally-ducted heat pumps start at $13,000 and qualify for a $6,500 rebate, making them less than a new furnace and air conditioner.

Do you install cold-climate/variable speed heat pumps?

Yes, all the heat pumps we install are cold-climate models.

Which brands do you install?

Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Moovair for heat pumps, Giant and A.O. Smith for water heaters.

What size heat pump does my home need?

Bigger isn't always better, so we take great care in "right-sizing" heat pumps. A heat pump that's oversized will be noisy and less efficient, costing more than necessary every year of operation.

Do I need to upgrade to 200 Amp service?

We have many clients that have installed heat pumps and remained on 100 Amp service. It depends on overall household load.

What happens in a power outage?

Neither furnaces nor heat pumps work in a power outage. We recommend wood stove inserts for fireplaces and/or battery backup.

Can you replace my boiler with a heat pump?

Yes, we do boiler replacements.

Where should I put the outside unit?

The perfect location is over soil (not paving) so winter condensation can be absorded, the heat pump must be a foot out from a wall and not have restricted airflow in front. Ideally the heat pump gets some sun, which helps melt ice. Ice buildup on paved surfaces can result in a slipping hazard. You can choose a wall mounted rack (on double-brick walls) or a stand.

How long do your installations take?

A straightforward installation is usually completed in 2 days, occasionally 3.
